Our leaders manipulate us and we allow it.

We think we live in a democracy. We think ultimate power rest with us the people. We think our leaders are our servants, accountable to us the people and doing what we want, making decisions for the greater good of all. We think that because our religious leaders, political leaders, corporate leaders and media leaders have cleverly led us to believe we are still in control when we are not.

Media has become a monopoly. Only a handful of multinationals own and control the majority of mainstream media outlets. We are given the information they want us to have. They tell us the conclusion we are supposed to reach.  Mainstream media is now mass produced, corporate friendly, political friendly (liberal/conservative) and unchallenged. The information channels that most people use in democratic societies are becoming more distorted and are eroding democracy.

Our political leaders don't care about democracy. Why should they? After all, being accountable to the people only reduces their power. ObamaCare, national debt, balanced budget, gun control and Presidential Executive Orders are prime examples of that. George Orwell said, "No one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. The object of power is power."  Government leaders and big business leaders are bedfellows, with ex-politicians often sitting on the boards of big companies, the business community is able to unduly and undemocratically influence the legislative process, steering our legal system towards a corporate controlled state. Political leaders and corporate leaders work hand in hand to erode democracy because that is in their interest. When will we wake up to the fact that we are merely a pseudo-democracy? Some might argue that we are this already.

Why would corporate leaders put people first when their ultimate goal is to maximize profits? When it comes to what is best for the people and profit they will always put profit before people. C.E.O’s do not lose sleep when they move manufacturing overseas and layoff hundreds of people if it increases profit. The decision by General Motors to manufacture the Buick Envision in China is a slap in the face to American taxpayers who bailed GM out of bankruptcy in 2008. General Motors does not care what American's think they are banking we will be stupid enough to purchase the Envision SUV and once again put our greed above what is good for America and its people.

We need to realize that whenever any group of people, even religious leaders, have a disproportionate influence over government policy democracy suffers. There are no exceptions. When religious leaders have access to millions upon millions of dollars without accountability to the government like the rest of us they have disproportionate influence. When religious leaders live in multi-million dollar estates provided by their ministry, free of income tax, they have disproportionate influence. When religious leaders can threaten political leaders with excommunication and block votes they have disproportionate influence.

If we want to live in societies that are democracies only in name, bearing all the attributes of dictatorships, then we only need to carry on in the direction we are headed. If that is what we want, then we will have it soon, sooner than we think. When we can no longer be critical of political, religious, corporate and media leaders without being accused of being racist, bigots, prejudice, politically incorrect and un-American we are no longer living in a democracy.

We need to understand exactly how we are manipulated into doing the bidding of our leaders, against our own interest. We need to understand the methods of manipulation:

Media ownership is central to the manipulation of the people. Manipulate the people, and you manipulate their vote. You either control the media by owning it or by doing favors for those who own it. In the United States, large corporations own the media and they receive favors from the government in the form of influence over legislation and special tax breaks. Only five mega-media corporations control almost all of the U.S. media, which is why American’s are becoming among the most brainwashed people in the world.

The war against terror has allowed political leaders to take freedoms from the people under the guise of "national security" and "protection". The politicians want the war on terror to seem unwinnable because it serves those who want power. Fear is one of the greatest manipulators of people. Create fear in the minds of the people and they fall in line – fear of hell, fear of crime, fear of terrorist, fear of layoff, fear of guns, fear of police, etc. Herman Goering said at the Nuremberg Trials: "The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Control language and you control people's thoughts – political correctness. The elimination of selected words is a prerequisite for the control of the people. Radical Muslim Terrorist, Illegal Aliens, Christmas and the list goes on. Political correctness has corrupted the news media, universities, business, Congress, politics, etc. Political correctness is a tool used to limit thought in education, science, and culture by intimidation and coercion.

Politicians use patriotism to manipulate and control. As long as people are patriotic, they will overlook the sins of their government, both towards their own people and towards other those in other countries.

The promise of eternal life and the threat of hell has been one of the greatest manipulator of people than any other form of manipulation in history. The Roman Catholic Church has even apologized for its abusive past, but that does not necessarily mean their apology will have much effect on their future behavior. Anything "fundamentalist" just means that ideology is being put in front of people and is a recipe for individual and mass abuse.

It is untrue that only the uneducated can be manipulated. Some believe that the educated are actually the easiest to manipulate because they have been trained to process so much information that they often become less critical. The educated also tend to need an opinion on everything. Students in the past were more revolutionary and questioned society more on serious matters than they do today. It seems the main issues for students today are what foods are served in the cafeteria.

Politicians never admit a lie they simply keep repeating it until the people believe it. Obama administration said over an over Benghazi was the results of a video; Hillary did not send or receive classified information on unsecured Internet; Obama if you want to keep your doctor and your insurance you can; Bill Clinton I did not have sex with that woman; Richard Nixon I am not a crook; Obama I didn’t call the Islamic State a ‘JV’ team; John McCain met with Islamist State terrorists; Obama Republicans have filibustered 500 pieces of legislation; Paul Ryan a boy didn’t want a government lunch but one in a brown paper bag; Mitch McConnell took $600,000 from anti-coal groups; Republican cuts to Ebola research are killing people, etc.

Politicians are using unnecessary secrecy as a means to keep truth from surfacing and manipulate the people. Every government needs to have some level of secrecy in military matters to protect its boarders and its people. But when this is used to withhold information from the people which is not necessary for national security then the use of classify information is being abused. This is now happening on a daily basis because politicians do not consider the voters right to know to be important.

Leading politicians know exactly how to duck their way out of sticky situations by setting up a string of fall guys and girls. Obama has proven to be an expert at this. Master manipulators are great at throwing up smokescreens and being evasive. The people are continually manipulated into thinking the problem is everyone except the leader.

One of the simplest ways to control the information going to the media is to control which reporters have access to the source of information. Reporters were manipulated during recent middle-east conflicts when they were embedded with the military personnel on the battlefield. They were dependent on the forces they were embedded with for protection in hostile environments. It is doubtful you will be critical of the hand that is feeding and protecting you.

Above are but a few of the methods used to manipulate society. Anytime we allow ourselves to be manipulated we lose power. It is naïve to think leaders always put the people’s interest first! The leaders of Greece wanted to win elections regardless of what was in the best interest of Greece and you see what happen. The Democrats are known for buying votes with welfare programs regardless of what is in the best interest of the United States – national debt. Republicans and Democrats do not take a stand on immigration because they want the Hispanic vote regardless of what is in the best interest of the United States. 

Note: An example of political manipulation of citizens Carpio claims the U.S. presence in the Philippines will boost Philippine defense against China. Senator Santiago claims the U.S. is responsible for the Philippines being weak when it comes to their military.

The U.S. will protect their equipment and personnel in the Philippines against China's aggression so Carpio is partly right. But, as any nation would the U.S. will do what is in the best interest of the U.S. when it comes to China. 

Senator Santiago needs to blame Philippine politicians for the weak military and poverty in the Philippines. Corrupt Filipino politicians are responsible for both. The U.S. has protected and have personnel stationed in Japan, Germany and South Korea and all three countries are not faced with the poverty problems as the Philippines is and all three have strong military units and all three are INDEPENDENT of the U.S. and the leaders of Germany, Japan and South Korea do not blame all their problems on their people clinging to colonial ideas.  Senator Santiago is right the agreement between the U.S. and Philippines is made weaker because the U.S. does not recognize it as a treaty.

What about those little "white lies"?

In Catholic moral teaching, lying is the deliberate attempt to mislead someone by telling an untruth. The Catechism is quite clear how the Catholic Church views lying and the damage they believe deception causes.

Even though the Catholic Church opposes all types of deception most Catholics, like everyone else, routinely engage in “little white lies”. My mother had a problem with “little white lies” because she thought it was sometimes better than telling the truth in order to protect the feelings of others. 

I would often tell her a lie is lie and there is no exception for “white lies” because when you tell “white lies” your goal is to deceive.  She told me hundreds of times throughout the years it is better to say: “The meal was delicious!” – When it wasn’t. “The dress looks beautiful on you – When it did not. “Your perfume smells great – when the odor was foul. “I love your new hair style” – When it was horrible.  It was her way of not being confrontational and keeping peace.    

In recent years I have become faced with a personal dilemma about the sting operations used by those doing investigative reporting. Are those involved justified in lying about who they are and what they are doing to obtain what they perceive to be a better good?

I do not dispute the good that has come from some undercover sting operations, but do the results justify the means. Are pro- life groups justified in lying in order to discover the truth about Planned Parenthood? There have been debates among faithful Catholics on whether lying is ever justified in a good cause.

The Lord denounces lying as the work of the devil. The devil lied to Eve in the Garden of Eden— he convinced Eve to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil by lying to her.  Is that story literally true or not? I do not know, but I know it teaches a moral lesson that is valuable in 2015. It demonstrates what God does not want us to do.

The Catechism says lying is always wrong. There are no “good lies” that are fundamentally different from “bad lies”; all lies share the same nature—to lead the person to whom the lie is being told away from the truth. The purpose of speech is to communicate known truth to others.

There are not degrees of sin in the eyes of God – sin is sin. I admit it is difficult for humans not to justify lying to save the life of an unborn child and it is difficult not to lie to prevent hurting someone’s feelings. But, let an elected politician lie to us we can find no way to justify his or her actions.

Christ instructed us that the devil is “the father of lies,” if we believe that then who is the father of abortion? It’s the same devil and the he doesn’t care if we sin with good intentions or bad intentions his only goal is to get us to sin.

Every “willful untruth” does harm to someone—it harms both yourself and the person you’re lying to.

Paragraph 2489 of the Catholic Catechism has been cited many times by those who want to “justified deception”.  It states no one is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it.

Using that argument to justify lying can present us with problems. We can keep our mouths shut and say nothing by which we do not reveal the truth to those that have no need to know – not GOSSIP! But paragraph 2489 of the Catechism does not allow us to open our mouths and deliberately deceive another person by telling untruths. It appears how we apply paragraph 2489 makes a difference in determining right and wrong.

Some would argue that if you do not tell the truth as you know it and choose to remain silent that is as great a sin as lying to deceive others. I do not know about that. If you say, “I do not have an opinion one way or the other and you do that is a lie”, if you say I do not know when you do that is a lie”, so I suppose they are correct.  I guess the safest thing to do is say, “I would prefer not to get involved” or “I would prefer to keep my opinion to myself”.

Every decision leads to a new moral or immoral act – God has given us the free will to decide for ourselves.

Paragraph 2488 of the Catechism presents another dilemma it states, “The right to communicate the truth is not unconditional”. It states everyone must live in such a way that his or her life conforms to the Gospel teachings of fraternal love. This requires us to judge whether or not it is appropriate to reveal the truth to someone who asks for it.

What should we consider when revealing the truth: The good and safety of others, respect for privacy, the ‘why’ for our being silent about what should not be known and our use of a discreet language. Our duty to avoid scandal often commands strict discretion. We still must remember regardless of our motives deliberate deception is always a sin.

I confess I personally do not believe anyone is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it. I have certainly used priestly privileges (not seal of confession) to avoid discussing issues about others or to tell someone I do not think it is my place to comment on that subject.

I also want to add I do not think any form of ‘gossip’ should be acceptable to a Christian. We should not participate in gossip or listen to gossip. A friend who is a habitual gossiper is reason enough to end a relationship.

 We always have options we can remain silent when asked certain questions; we can change the topic; we can excuse ourselves from the conversation. But we cannot lie. If you know Joe is a thief you cannot say “Joe is not a thief.” We can never confirm a known lie to be the truth.

A good lesson to keep in mind comes from paragraph 1789 of the catechism: “One may never do evil so that good may result from it”.

In closing I would like to say: a non-believer can be a liar or be a person that never lies. The moral issue of lying or not lying is not unique to Christians. I believe myself to be a person who fears the Lord, walks by faith and yet I would lie in a life-threatening situation in order to oppose evil. There are several stories in the Bible where this happened to faithful servants of God.

I cannot say it is ever biblical correct to lie, but I am willing to say it is possible. The Bible nowhere explicitly approves of lying and as a minister I struggled through the years about how to teach on lying and some other issues.

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to Him: “… haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that hurry to run to evil, a lying witness who testifies falsely, and one who sows discord in a family” - (Proverbs 6:16–19).

You have to decide the moral issue of white lies based on the circumstances at the time. But, whatever you do, do not foolishly listen to sermons on Sunday and fall victim to guilt because you assume the speaker telling you what to do is practicing the same in his or her personal life. They make daily moral decisions just like you do. 

Will you again believe the lies of politicians and once again be disappointed?

The next elections are not that far away.  It is not too early to start listening closely to what the candidates are saying and if they have a record to investigate what they have done in the past. Regardless of their party affiliation all politicians make big promises.

How many of these promises are just bold-faced lies that you have heard many times in the past?  It is unfortunate that voters are more likely to believe statements made by their own political party, even if they’re totally false. Politicians make big promises they know they cannot keep because the lies work. They work because they say what people want to hear and not what is realistic. They give hopeless people false hope!  They feed the greed of greedy people.   If they make promises their audience wants to hear they can secure campaign money and win more votes. Voters have short memories if they are elected and fail to keep their promises people forget. President Obama proved that. He failed to keep his promises in his first term and was reelected.

Some politicians have learnt the art of telling half-truths or they have become experts at making excuses and blaming others. Again President Obama is a perfect example of that.

We need to learn the political language:

When a politician says “I will try” it does not mean he or she will. You can say you’ll “try to do the dishes,” even if you never get off the couch, technically you are not lying. “Try” is a great word for taking a stance that doesn’t actually require the politician to carry out any action.

When politicians are hot on the campaign trail, they’re willing to say just about anything to get votes. The words “I am committed to” flow freely. Committed to end poverty, increase jobs, improve education, end corruption, etc. If they say I promise to and don’t voters get turned off, but saying committed to does not sound like a promise to voters.

When a politician says, “The people are my biggest priority “you should start doubting all of his or her words. A politician’s biggest priority is to make sure they don’t turn off voters prior to the election. If that means making cuts, raising taxes, or prioritizing the demands of corporate lobbyists over your welfare once elected, they’ll do it. They will do it because there is always another election that they want to win.

Once a politician gets to the primaries or takes office, they’re going to have to make compromises, even if it means going back on their original agenda. They know that! When a candidate tells you, “I will not compromise on my political or moral views” take that to mean he or she is lying to you.

When a politician plants an idea in your mind, even a false one, you don’t forget it. That’s why we still joke that Al Gore thinks he invented the Internet, rumors circulated that Bill Clinton and John McCain fathered illegitimate children, and 20% of Americans don’t think Obama is a U.S. citizen. Politicians are well aware of this trick, and they use it to smear their opponents. Even if their claims are completely false they do not care. They have one goal win at all cost. Also know that the bias media does the same thing. Look at what the media is doing to Dr. Carson in the U.S.

You need to know that when politicians deny allegations made against them their denial could be a lie. Bill Clinton lied about his affair with Monica Lewinsky under oath.  Presidential candidate John Edwards continually denied having an extramarital affair. Then, in a 2008 when his political career was over he admitted to the affair. He lied for two more years that he had fathered a child during that relationship. Nixon said, “I’m not a crook.” Turns out, he was. In 1974, Nixon was ordered to repay over $400,000 in back taxes to the IRS for making incorrect deductions.

I said earlier politicians are good at blaming others well consider the following: Anthony Weiner claimed in an interview that his “system was hacked.” He only admitted the scandalous photos were him once the women started coming out and telling their stories.  Politician Michael Grimm when he was under federal investigation for two years for allegations related to campaign finance fraud claimed government prosecutors had a “politically driven vendetta against” him. He eventually pleaded guilty.

Politicians are experienced wordsmiths. They spend a lot of time raising campaign money, getting votes, and striking deals. They know how to spin a story to get what they want, and they have the resources they need to cover up past offenses. When their office and reputation is at stake, the ends sometimes justify the means.

t is important that the citizens remember if the people are corrupt their politicians will be corrupt. Corrupt people elect corrupt politicians. We should examine ourselves before we vote and make sure our own selfish greed and immorality are not influencing our vote. The needs of the nation as a whole are more important than our personal needs.
